Biggest Killer is Distracted Driving using Smart Phones

One of the main causes of accidents has always been speeding and around 10 years ago, before people had smart phones, around a third of fatal crashes were caused by speeding.

However, since the advent of smart phones, driving while distracted has taken over from speeding as a major cause of fatal accidents with 64% of all traffic accidents in the United States, some 1.6 million, involving the use of a cell phone. In fact, there are over 330,000 severe injury accidents caused by people texting.

In Georgia, two new laws for distracted driving were introduced in 2010. One bans texting while operating a motor vehicle and the other prohibits anyone 18 and younger from the use of a wireless device while driving. Both are around a $150 fine.

Distracted driving is a top killer in the U.S. and even though the number of car crashes is slowly decreasing, those involving cell phones are increasing.
