Georgia State Troopers Cracking Down on Drivers

During the holiday season, Georgia State Patrol Troopers have been cracking down on drivers.

The troopers said that they have found preventing distracted and impaired driving has cut down on the number of accidents over the holidays and advise people not to drink and drive when attending family events. They also warned about speeding saying that if drivers were to cut their speed by as little as 10 mph there would be a reduction in the number of accidents.

The Christmas weekend saw three DUI arrests by Georgia State Troopers in Valdosta, one in Albany, and five in Thomasville. More are expected for the New Year weekend.

Across South Georgia as a whole there were nine DUI arrests.

Troopers went on to say that they have also been keeping their eye on those driving while texting.

The holiday weekend saw total of 17 wrecks in South Georgia, five in Albany, nine in Valdosta, and three in Thomasville.

Best Driving Techniques for the Ice

If you have to drive in the snow or ice, try and make sure you can wait until the sand trucks and snow plows have been out first.

Then, you need to learn the best techniques for winter driving. If you can, try and practice them in a large open space where there are no other vehicles first, just so that you can learn how your car reacts.

Firstly, you should have your lights on, so that other motorists can see you and ensure they are clean and your windshield as well.

The most important thing when driving on icy roads is to decrease your speed and allow much more space than usual between you and the car in front, to reduce the risk of a rear end collision. If you do have to brake, do it more gently than usual to save skidding, but if you feel the wheels locking up then ease off the brake.

To keep better traction, use low gears, especially when going downhill and never use cruise control or overdrive on icy roads.

Remember that even though the temperature may be above freezing, there could still be ice patches in some areas so be alert at all times.

Biggest Killer is Distracted Driving using Smart Phones

One of the main causes of accidents has always been speeding and around 10 years ago, before people had smart phones, around a third of fatal crashes were caused by speeding.

However, since the advent of smart phones, driving while distracted has taken over from speeding as a major cause of fatal accidents with 64% of all traffic accidents in the United States, some 1.6 million, involving the use of a cell phone. In fact, there are over 330,000 severe injury accidents caused by people texting.

In Georgia, two new laws for distracted driving were introduced in 2010. One bans texting while operating a motor vehicle and the other prohibits anyone 18 and younger from the use of a wireless device while driving. Both are around a $150 fine.

Distracted driving is a top killer in the U.S. and even though the number of car crashes is slowly decreasing, those involving cell phones are increasing.

When To Move A Child To A Booster Seat

While many parents wish to move their child to a booster seat, it is important not to move a child too soon.

Children can be in a booster seat once they reach 40 pounds and up to 80 pounds. As long as your child fits into a car seat with a harness, he or she is most safe in a car seat.

If your child is using a booster, be certain to always use a lap and shoulder belt, not just a lap belt. The lap belt should be snug against your child’s thighs and the shoulder belt should be across the chest and shoulder.

Most older kids should be in a booster seat up to 12 years old. Once the child has reached the height of 4’9″ and can comfortably sit on the seat with the knees bent then they can sit in a regular seat. But remember that the lap and shoulder belt should fit your child as if it does with a booster seat- which is across the chest and shoulder, not the neck and face.

Remember a safe care seat is vital for the protection of your child.

New Legal Action in the Case of Kendrick Johnson

A new legal action has been filed in the case of Kendrick Johnson.

Kendrick Johnson, aged 17 was discovered dead in a rolled up gym mat back in January 2013 at Lowndes High School, Valdosta, but following an investigation it was determined that he died of an accidental death. However, his parents did not accept the findings and filed a wrongful death suit earlier this year against Brian and Branden Bell, who they say killed their son which was later withdrawn.

Now, there will be a hearing before the end of August which will determine how much the Johnsons will have to pay the lawyers of the defendants which could cost them nearly $1 million.

They have also filed another suit against the Bell brothers which alleges they violently assaulted their son along with at least one other accomplice. They also allege that the Bells told their father who is an FBI agent who entered into an agreement with authorities and the school to cover up the death.

The the U.S. Department of Justice have said they cannot prove that Kendrick was killed following the three year investigation and it appears that the Johnson family have no proof that that was the case.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, a Toyota Tundra which was towing a boat was been driven by 66 year old Danny Robbins of Columbia, S.C. His passenger was 93 year old Bramble Robbins also of Columbia.

Apparently Danny Robbins fell asleep at the wheel and hit a road sign in the emergency area. He over corrected and lost control of the vehicle which then overturned several times, coming to rest in the northbound center lane.

Danny Robbins was wearing a seat belt and was taken to South Georgia Medical Center for treatment of his injuries. However, Bramble Robbins was not wearing a seat belt and he was ejected from the vehicle and was declared deceased at the scene.

The wreck caused major traffic hold ups on the Interstate and it took around 2 hours for the wreckage to be cleared and traffic to start moving.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, the accident happened at around 10.15 p.m. when a white 2007 Ford F250 which was being driven by 39 year old Curtis Lanier James, of Tallahassee, Fla. was traveling east on Dry Lake Road near Simpson Road in Quitman. Investigators said he was driving too fast for the conditions of the roadway and while negotiating a curve he traveled off the shoulder, hit a mailbox, and then over corrected which caused the vehicle to spin across Dry Lake Road. The pickup then went off the other shoulder, hit a tree then flipped ending up on its roof.

Woman Dies in Pulaski State Prison

Bonnie Rocheleau died of double pneumonia last March at Pulaski State Prison and now her family is looking for $1 million in damages following her death.

For months, 58 year old Rocheleau from Valdosta uffered from COPD, yet it wasn’t until she almost stopped breathing entirely that the prison medical staff decided she should be hospitalized.

The family is suing the Georgia Department of Corrections and Georgia Correctional Health Care and the branch of Augusta University that contacts with the DOC to operate and staff prison medical units and states that the failure to obtain Rocheleau medical attention caused her death along with nine other women while at the Pulaski and Emanuel Women’s Facility.

Rocheleau died as she was nearing the end of a seven-year sentence for vehicular homicide. She pleaded guilty to that charge in 2009 after an accident in which the vehicle she was driving crossed a highway median and struck an SUV carrying seven people. One was killed.

Rocheleau visited the infirmary at Pulaski to complain that she couldn’t breathe three days in a row before she died. Each time, the document says, she was returned to the general prison population after receiving drugs or breathing treatments. On the third day she was transferred to Taylor Regional Hospital for a chest X-ray but returned to the prison infirmary and then it was decided to return her to hospital again but it was too late, she died.
