Valdosta Carnival Owner Jailed

The owner of a company operating a carnival has been charged and paid damages in relation to two separate incidents in which riders were injured on his attractions.

Joshua Macaroni, who worked for his family’s business, Family Attractions Amusement of Valdosta, Ga., was sentenced to 30 days in jail, five years of probation in Georgia, a $22,500 fine and $225 in court costs in the criminal case on a charge related to an incident in which one of his rides injured four people in North Carolina in 2013.

Macaroni pleaded guilty to a charge of felony obstruction of justice for altering a machine to pass an inspection. According to a lawsuit filed against him and employee Timothy Tutterrow, they re-wired a ride called the Vortex in October 2013 and four people were injured shortly after the alterations, and they were tossed 20 to 30 feet as they were getting off the Vortex suffering injuries such as severe head trauma, a brain injury, a broken neck, a fractured skull, vertebrae fractures, total blinding of the left eye and nerve damage.

In a second lawsuit, they agreed to settle $50,000 in the case of a Pennsylvania mother whose daughter was injured in a Family Attractions ride, breaking her leg.
